Generic OBD-II scanners read the powertrain control module. They cannot communicate with the body control module, transmission control unit, ABS control unit, airbag system, or proprietary subsystems on most modern vehicles.

Apex invests in OE-level diagnostic equipment — Bosch KTS, Snap-on Solus Edge, Autel MaxiSys Ultra, plus manufacturer-specific tools: VAG-COM VCDS for Audi/VW/Porsche, BMW ISTA with ICOM Next, Mercedes XENTRY, Porsche PIWIS, Volvo VIDA, Honda HDS, Toyota Techstream — for every platform we service. The investment is the reason we can diagnose what generic scan tools can't.

The diagnostic charge at Apex is $145 for a standard check-engine-light scan (one hour at the labor rate). Complex multi-system intermittent-fault diagnostics run $290-$425. The diagnostic charge is waived in full if you authorize the repair at Apex. A written diagnostic estimate is delivered before any repair work begins. QuestionWhy generic scanners don't work on modern cars.

Modern cars run 30-80 individual control modules on multiple CAN bus networks. A $35 OBD-II reader pulls codes from the powertrain control module only — about 10% of the diagnostic surface. The rest (BCM, TCM, ABS, airbag, body subsystems, comfort modules) requires manufacturer-specific protocols and pricier diagnostic equipment. Most chain shops don't invest. The misdiagnosis pattern follows.

  • The generic OBD-II scanner reads powertrain DTCs and basic live data — about ten percent of what's stored in a 2018+ vehicle's control modules.
  • OE-level scan tools communicate with every control module on every CAN bus, in both diagnostic and bidirectional mode (we can command actuators and read responses to verify component health).
  • Manufacturer-specific tools add coding, programming, and adaptation work that the OE-level generic tools can't do — like resetting a BMW's adaptive transmission learning, or coding a new Mercedes air-suspension control module to the vehicle.

Second OpinionWhat if the chain shop already diagnosed it?

Bring the chain-shop work order. Apex will run a second OE-level diagnostic at the same $145 charge, waived in full if Apex performs the repair. We have the equipment the chain shop probably didn't have, and we'll read deeper into the modules than a generic-scanner-only read would have produced.

About one in four chain-shop diagnoses that we re-scan are corrected by the Apex second-look — the dealer or chain misread a code, or stopped at the easiest part to replace instead of running the diagnostic to its actual root cause. The other three in four are confirmed by our scan, and we perform the repair at the Apex labor rate (often less than the chain shop's quote once you account for parts markup differences).

Hybrid + EVDo you diagnose hybrid and EV systems?

Yes. Apex has invested in hybrid and EV diagnostic equipment at all five locations (Autel MaxiSys EV, Bosch FSA hybrid analyzer, Toyota Techstream for Prius/Camry hybrid traction batteries). Apex is one of the few independent groups in Maricopa County certified to diagnose and service hybrid traction batteries (Tesla Model S/X/3/Y included, plus all Toyota/Lexus/Honda hybrid platforms). Gilbert is the group's strongest EV-service location and holds the most current OE diagnostic equipment for Tesla, Rivian, Ford F-150 Lightning, and Lucid Air.

How long does a diagnostic take?

A standard check-engine-light diagnostic with OE-level scanning runs about one hour. Complex multi-system intermittent-fault diagnostics with live-data analysis can run two to three hours. Apex provides a written estimate of diagnostic time before work begins. Most diagnostics complete same-day if the vehicle is dropped off in the morning.

Will you put the diagnosis in writing before any repair work?

Yes. Every Apex diagnostic produces a written report with the codes pulled, the live-data observations, the recommended repair, the parts estimate, and the labor estimate. No repair work begins without your written authorization of the estimate. This is non-negotiable across all five Apex locations.

Can I bring my own scan tool?

You're welcome to. Apex techs are happy to compare notes against any scan-tool data you bring in. Most customer-grade scan tools read powertrain codes only and can't communicate with body, transmission, ABS, or proprietary subsystem modules. Apex's OE-level equipment reads the full diagnostic surface.

Do you do diagnostic-only visits without repair?

Yes. A diagnostic visit charge is $145 (or $290-$425 for complex multi-system work). If you choose not to authorize the repair at Apex, the diagnostic charge stands. If you do authorize the repair, the diagnostic charge is waived in full. Some customers use Apex for second-opinion diagnostics on chain-shop work orders before authorizing $3,000+ in work elsewhere.

What's your accuracy rate on complex diagnostics?

Apex's first-time-correct rate on complex multi-system diagnostics is over 92%. The 8% that requires re-work is documented and the customer is not charged additional diagnostic time for our diagnostic error. About one in four chain-shop diagnoses that we re-scan are corrected by our second-look.
